Things to know at $10,000
- If you’re paying off cards, compare the loan’s APR with your cards’ APRs. A loan only saves money if its APR is lower and you don’t run the cards back up.
- Going from 36 to 60 payments lowers the monthly payment but adds interest. The table shows how much.
- Have recent pay stubs or tax returns ready; lenders often verify income at this amount.
If a lender charges an origination fee
Some lenders take a fee out of the loan before paying it to you. With a 5% fee on $10,000, the lender keeps $500 and you receive $9,500, but you repay the full $10,000 plus interest.
The fee raises the APR. A loan with a 14.9% interest rate over 36 months and a 5% fee has an APR of about 18.6%. If you need the full $10,000 in hand, you’d have to borrow about $10,526. Open the payment calculator to try a different fee.
Questions
Will a $10,000 loan help my credit?
Paying on time can help over time, and paying off card balances lowers your utilization. Applying usually adds a hard inquiry, and a new account lowers your average account age at first.
What income do I need?
Each lender sets its own rules. They look at your income alongside your existing debt payments, known as your debt-to-income ratio.
